web2mcp

Turn any website or HTTP API into a standalone MCP server.

The brief

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is powerful, but wiring a new website or API into an MCP client is manual and repetitive. I wanted a tool that could discover a site's structure and generate a working MCP server automatically.

What I made

I built web2mcp: it discovers a site or API (via JSON-LD, forms, and OpenAPI), generates the MCP server code, stores credentials encrypted, and supports multiple protocols. It's installable via pip and auto-configures for common MCP clients.

Reflection

  • Code generation beats runtime scraping for reliability — you get a real server you can inspect.
  • Encrypted credential storage is essential for a tool that touches authenticated APIs.

Tech stack

  • Python
  • MCP
  • codegen
  • OpenAPI
  • JSON-LD

Results

  • Turns any website or HTTP API into a standalone MCP server automatically.
  • Discovery via JSON-LD, forms, and OpenAPI covers most real sites.
  • Encrypted credential storage and multi-protocol support make it production-usable.
